Julia • 21 • She/They
Hi! My name is Julia, but you can call me Mouthy! I'm a 21 y/o self-taught, freelance artist with a passion for pharmacology and anything medical!I struggle with mental illnesses, such as anxiety/panic disorder, OCD, and late-diagnosed Autism/ADHD. Many of my characters/works reflect these themes by personifying the different mental issues that I work to accommodate and live with daily.Psychology is another interest of mine, which happens to work well with my special interest, pharmacology; specifically SSRIs, a class of antidepressants. I enjoy designing personifications for all types of drugs, with psychopharmacological drugs being my personal favorite.
Where I Was
I attended a vocational high school where I obtained professional graphic design training, as well as video editing, photography, photo editing, and website designing skills. I still make use of a lot of these skills in my artwork today. After high school, I planned to continue my graphic design training and attend an art school in the city, yet I couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't what I wanted to do. About a month after graduation, I confronted my parents and announced that I didn't want to be a graphic designer - I wanted to attend pharmacy school. After a lot of work done in a comically short amount of time, I was able to apply to the pharmacy school that was, funny enough, right next to the art school I was supposed to go to; they even shared dorms. A few weeks later, I'd been accepted. I'd never been more excited about school in my life.Unfortunately, just because you're passionate about something doesn't mean you're prepared for it. I was thrown into a world where I was expected to be self-sufficient despite not even knowing how to use a stove. I take solace in the fact that it wasn't the academics I struggled with, but it didn't matter at the time. I was struggling.
I'd spent my entire life up to this point doing the bare minimum. I'd never have homework to take home in high school since I could just do it in the next class. Studying was never something I'd ever had to do, much less learn to do effectively. If I could get 80s and 90s without studying, why bother? I was fine being average, I didn't want people expecting too much from me. I finished high school with all A's and a few B's on my transcript. Give it up for the minimum required effort. The bare minimum mentality wasn't just for school, it was for pretty much anything. Life was just so tiring all the time, it felt like expending anything more than minimum effort would only leave me feeling worn out and completely exhausted, not that I didn't feel like that most of the time anyway. I never seemed to feel 100%, always bogged down by aches and pains with no discernable causes. It was the constant nausea that was the worst of it.
I'd imagine my diet had a lot to do with that. Autistic people are infamous for having that stereotypical diet of chicken fingers and plain buttered pasta. My diet followed that stereotype to the letter. Carbs were the only thing I could choke down, and that was if the emetophobia was behaving well enough for me to think about food in the first place. A few bites were all I could eat before the nausea returned. For nearly 19 years I ate meal portions barely fit for an 8-year-old.So there I was, a freshly turned 18-year-old with autism, sensory processing disorder, and newly medicated ADHD. I had never been taught or had the energy to cook or eat anything other than snack foods and carbs, nor been taught or had the energy to do laundry, dishes, or maintain a clean living space in the slightest. I had zero actual study skills, frighteningly below-average social skills, and 12 other mental illnesses all being held together by 150mg of Zoloft and a special interest in pharmacology.I like to compare my attention span and general abilities to that of a cheetah. They're the fastest land animal on earth, capable of running from 60-80 miles per hour, but there's a catch; they can only do it for a very short amount of time. A cheetah can only run at top speeds for about a quarter of a mile, which is basically a few seconds for them before it needs to rest. I absolutely crushed it the first few weeks/months. I kept the entire dorm and bathroom clean (I had a suite and shared a bathroom with two other people), I submitted all of my work early, I went and ate each meal in the dining halls, and I was getting top marks on everything I did. I applied for a minor in health sciences and took more classes, I met with the head of the IRB, and I was conducting my own research projects on the side for fun. Like a cheetah in a sprint. But then I hit that metaphorical quarter mile. I'd been pushing so hard, running on the dopamine attained from doing something new and interesting. It was around Christmas break. I guess two weeks off wasn't enough.
Things Break Down
I'm not sure if everyone's brain works this way or if it's just mine, but when one mental illness becomes an issue, in time they all do. One falls they all fall kind of deal. It isn't a stretch to say a lot of the reason I did so well those first few months was probably because I'd been hyper-fixated on college. Not a normal hyperfixation though, this one took insane amounts of energy that I was about to feel the full weight of. So once that hyperfixation wore off, all bets were off. Now, instead of my brain naturally wanting to work, I had to fight it to do any work at all, and that was just the beginning. In hindsight, this was my brain begging me to take a break, but I couldn’t bring myself to stop pushing. I was determined to continue going, even without the edge of hyperfocus. ADHD was the catalyst, it fell first, but even without it, things wouldn't have gone much better for much longer.Remember how I mentioned I couldn't do laundry? I never learned, so every weekend I'd pack up all of my clothes and sheets and have one of my parents come to pick me up (I couldn't drive either) and drive me home with them. It was only 45 minutes away, and I'd stay the weekend. It wasn't like I had any friends or activities to do back at school. Despite having passions for art and science, I didn't fit in well with either group. The art students tended to steer clear of pharmacy students, and the pharmacy students seemed to find me offputting. We're at a pharmacy school, and I'm the weird one for asking people what their favorite classes of medications are? No one wanted to talk about drug history or chemical synthesis with me, and it was disappointing. I couldn't understand why no one else seemed to care. With nearly all of the other students being high-achieving allistic neurotypicals, being autistic felt lonely. I spent all of my free time alone, usually in my dorm, studying and learning about drugs for fun.I started skipping meals. Going to the dining hall became too much work, and I wanted to save my effort and energy for studying. My blood sugar would dip, and my body would start trembling. I was dizzy, nauseous, and my limbs felt heavy and cold. I'd order pizza to the dorm and eat a few bites or the entire thing in one sitting. I felt sick regardless. It didn't take long for ordering food to also become too much work. At that point, I was eating plain peanut butter out of the jar and fistfuls of gummy candy just to stop the shaking. Sensory processing disorder became the next issue.Despite how much I was sacrificing to give myself more time to work, it didn't matter. It was like my brain refused to listen to me. Trying to sit down and study felt crushing, it made my entire body itch. If I did manage to get some work done, nothing stuck. My memory was failing, I was constantly confused, and I started picking at my skin again. I spent more time cleaning bloody fingerprints off of things than I did cleaning anything else at the time. What I now know was OCD, specifically excoriation or dermatillomania OCD, had joined the chaos.
When I'd started school, we'd been in a hybrid model for classes, some online, some in person. I didn't realize how much this had benefited me until they took that away. Multiple 3 to 4-hour long labs per week, which wouldn't have been too big of an issue if it wasn't for the fact that some of them didn't allow you to sit down. I seemed to be the only one who couldn't handle this. My legs would start to feel heavy and uncomfortable, my head would spin and I could feel my heart pounding in my throat. It became harder to breathe as time went on. Had I not been wearing a labcoat that went down to my shoes, I would've seen the horrible shades of reddish-purple my legs were no doubt turning. That's what happens when someone with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (or POTS) stands up for too long; all of their blood pools in their legs, and the blood vessels can't constrict tight enough to pump adequate amounts of blood back to the heart and brain. The severe dehydration and lack of actual food probably had something to do with how awful I felt as well. It took around another year before I finally found a doctor who took me seriously and knew what I was talking about, and I was diagnosed with POTS.
